Off to War Again–Who’s Side is God on?

Who’s Side is God on?
Now that we are ready to invade Iran and with the looming threat of a possible nuclear war with North Korea notwithstanding the nuclear threats posed by Pakistan and India, it seems the whole world is poised on the brink of a world war holocaust. But the big question on everyone’s mind is, “Who’s side is God on?”

God does exist and He remains ONE even though He may be perceived differently by people in different parts of the world according to their angle of vision and/or religious or cultural upbringing. In other words, to give the simplest analogy that Srila Prabhupada used many times, one who lives in Arizona may think the sun is an Arizona sun or one who lives in Germany may think it is a German sun and so forth but the fact is this, the sun is spread everywhere and remains ONE. The sun does not discriminate, that is, someone basking in the sun in Bermuda experiences the same sunlight as another person in prison looking out at the world from their cell. Likewise, if someone in another part of the world cannot see that same sun this does not mean the sun is not shining. On a cloudy day we may say that the sun is not there but we know it exists nevertheless. Such is God. We may have different perceptions but He also exists even though we may not “perceive” Him or see Him. This is common sense. Therefore, the ancient Vedic texts also state that God is impartial and yet, as contradictory as this may sound, He is partial toward the righteous or those who have surrendered to His will. But what is God’s will?.

                                                                 AHIMSA

“Ahimsa” in Sanskrit means nonviolence. But what is its real meaning? According to A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada the Founder-acarya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, in one of his purports to the Bhagavad-gita (10.5) He states: “Ahimsa, nonviolence, means that one should not do anything that will put others into misery or confusion. Material activities that are promised by so many politicians, sociologists, philanthropists, etc., do not produce very good results. Because the politicians and philanthropists have no transcendental vision; they do not know what is actually beneficial for human society. Ahimsa means that people should be trained in such a way that the full utilization of the human body can be achieved. The human body is meant for spiritual realization, so any movement or any commissions which do not further that end commit violence on the human body. That which furthers the future happiness of the people in general is called nonviolence.” And again in (Bg. 13.12) Srila Prabhupada states: “Nonviolence is generally taken to mean not killing or destroying the body, but actually nonviolence means to not put others into distress. People in general are trapped by ignorance in the material concept of life, and they perpetually suffer material pains. So unless one elevates people to spiritual knowledge, one is practicing violence. One should try his best to distribute real knowledge to the people, so that they may become enlightened and leave this material entanglement. That is nonviolence.” There may be disagreement as to the nature of “real knowledge” but for those who are not familiar with the Vedic literatures it is Krsna who is none other than that ONE God almighty Himself and the origin of all that be. The best analogy Srila Prabhupada gave (one of many) is the doctor who must use his scalpel to cut the patient open to remove a cancer in order to save the patient. If that same doctor were to run out and use that same knife on someone else, it would be murder or an act of violence. While this may also be based upon ones perspective, the fact remains that in war, and sometimes war is inevitable according to time and place, God or Krsna will “arrange” a situation in which righteousness will overcome and defeat evil or demoniac natures. He does this to re-establish religious principles that He Himself has set into motion in human society and at the same time protect His devotees or the theists. But wait. How can God advocate a world war? Doesn’t this run contrary to the principles of peace and nonviolence?

                                                          THE MAHABHARATA

Perhaps the largest and oldest epic Sanskrit history of the world is the 100,000 verse “Mahabharata” which means “great India.” It was compiled 5,000 years ago by Lord Krsna’s literary incarnation Srila Krsna Dvapayana Vyasadeva who also wrote the monumental 18,000 verse Srimad-Bhagavatam, considered the “crown jewel” of all the Vedas. Srila Vyasadeva’s assitant in the writing of this work was none other than “Ganesa,” who holds a very prominent place in the pantheon of demigods. Mahabharata, then, is not an ordinary novel as we in the West have come to know it. While there are supposed religious scholars who want to classify it as “myth” or quaint folklore; it is actual fact. Just as one documenting the battle of D-Day in World War II to people 5,000 years from now. While it is historical fact, and while there were major personalities fighting in that war such as generals etc., there may be those who find this episode unbelievable.

The Mahabharata therefore is not an ordinary treatise because of the presence of Lord Sri Krsna and the events related to Him. That Krsna is God and not just a handsome Prince with astute philosophical observations and that what he says is absolute truth is the final thrust of the Gita itself.

This comes from reading and hearing the Vedas to assimilate its true meaning. Very briefly, Mahabharata deals with two feuding dynasties, the Kurus and the Pandavas culminating in the the famous, “Bhagavad-gita” which means “song of God.” That is, the Gita itself consisting of 700 verses is a battlefield dialogue between the warrior Arjuna and spoken by Lord Sri Krsna Himself. This is actually the heart and soul of the Mahabharata. While the story leading up to this great battle is mammoth in scope; it was a fratricidal conflict between the 100 sons of the blind King Dhrtarastra and his son Duryodhana and on the opposing side their cousins the Pandavas. Unique to this story is the fact that Krsna puts Arjuna into illusion regarding his apprehension at seeing his kinsmen prepared for battle. Regarding his “duty” as a soldier or “ksatriya,” Krsna begins to enlighten Arjuna as to the nature of the self and reveal transcendental knowledge regarding the “self” in a manner that future generations can also understand today; issues concerning the nature of the soul, God and our eternal relationship with Him. While God, or Krsna remains invisible to the living entity then, as in the previous analogy of the sun covered by clouds, He exists just the same. To eradicate any doubts in this regard we turn to a purport from the Srimad-Bhagavatam by Srila Prabhupada (6.4.24): “The transcendental position of the Supreme Personality of Godhead (Krsna) is not perceivable by the conditioned souls, who are accustomed to material vision and cannot understand that the Supreme Personality of Godhead exists in His abode, which is beyond that vision.

“Even if a materialistic person could count all the atoms in the universe, he would still be unable to understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The conditioned souls may try to understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead for many billions of years through their mental speculative processes, traveling at the speed of the mind or the wind, but still the Absolute Truth will remain inconceivable to them because a materialistic person cannot measure the length and breadth of the Supreme Personality of Godhead’s unlimited existence. If the Absolute Truth is beyond measurement, one may ask, how can one realize Him? The answer is given here by the word “svayambhuve” (unto the Supreme Lord, who is manifest with no cause), one may understand Him or not, but nevertheless He is existing in His own spiritual potency.” Although Krsna is the actual hero of the Mahabharata, the beauty of his position within this great work is that while appearing as a human being in an aristocratic dynasty, (The Pandu dynasty), He is God almighty Himself. Therefore, He appeared in the Pandu dynasty and was seen face to face. Thus, Krsna is no ordinary person. To corroborate this further, one of the great Vaisnava devotee saints living 500 years ago, Srila Rupa Goswami wrote many books on the subject of Krsna. He was a staunch devotee of Krsna consciousness and an erudite scholar on the subject of Vedic thought. In one of his many important and illuminating works, Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu or “The Nectar of Devotion,” he delineates the various aspects of bhakti-yoga, or the nature of devotional service to Lord Sri Krsna. Bhakti-yoga means, love and devotion. In that book, he relates a meeting between the great saint Narada Muni and King Yudhisthira who had just been enthroned as emperor of the world. Narada says to Yudhisthira (translations by Srila Prabhupada): “My dear King Yudhisthira, in this world you (the Pandava brothers) are the only fortunate people. The Supreme Personality of Godhead has appeared on this planet and is presenting Himself to you as an ordinary human being. He is always with you in all circumstances. He is living with you and covering Himself from the eyes of others. Others cannot understand that He is the Supreme Lord, but He is still living with you as your cousin, as your friend and even as your messenger. Therefore, you must know that nobody in this world is more fortunate than you.” Now that we have presented an inkling of the superiority of Krsna, we will set the stage for one of the biggest battles in human history, the battle of Kuruksetra. In this massive battle that would last 18 days and where 640 million soldiers would be slain, Krsna agrees to become the charioteer for His friend and warrior, Arjuna. These warriors were known as “ksatriyas” and were expert in the military sciences. In those days, ksatryias knew how to use sound vibrations or “mantras” to direct weapons and in fact had a weapon known as the “brahmastra” that was nuclear in origin but rather than explode like today’s nuclear devices, it imploded and in fact could be targeted like a laser with tremendous heat and light in defeating the enemy.

There were also water weapons that could counteract fire weapons and the art of warfare 5,000 years ago can be said to have harnessed mystical weaponry still unknown by today’s high technology and both sides were expert in their delivery. These are facts. In Vedic times there were also codes of war regarding time, place and circumstance. A ksatriyas duty then was to kill to uphold Vedic law and protect the citizenry and even the king would not return to his kingdom unless he was wounded in battle. It may also be noted that while the figure of 640 million soldiers is an inconceivable number compared to today’s statistics, there was only one king who basically ruled the world and so on the battlefield many nations participated and met for combat in one place. Later, other kings were enthroned in various parts of the globe known as the “seven islands” that is, Australasia, Europe, Oceania etc.

                                   KSATRIYAS and RELIGIOUS PRINCIPLES

When we say that it was a ksatriya’s duty to kill, this killing was not done whimsically but to uphold religious principles and annihilate demonic or ungodly elements within society. Defining a ksatriya’s specific duty Srila Prabhupada writes, (Bg.2.32) “For a ksatriya to be on the battlefield and to become nonviolent is the philosophy of fools. In the Parasara-smrti, or religious codes made by Parasara, the great sage and father of Vyasadeva, it is stated: “The ksatriyas duty is to protect the citizens from all kinds of difficulties, and for that reason he has to apply violence in suitable cases for law and order. Therefore, he has to conquer the soldiers of inimical kings, and thus, with religious principles, he should rule over the world.” The next question may be raised that one man’s religious principles may be another man’s poison. After all, don’t other nations go to war over what they believe to be their religious principles? This is a very valid question and one that requires insight and realization. In doing so, we will turn to the law books known as the Srimad-Bhagavatam for a definition of real religious principles: (Translation and purport by Srila Prabhupada): 6.3.19

dharman tu saksad bhagavat-pranitamna vai vidur rsayo napi devahna siddha-mukhya asura manusyahkuto nu vidyadhara-caranadayah

TRANSLATION

Real religious principles are enacted by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Although fully situated in the mode of goodness, even the great rsis who occupy the topmost planets cannot ascertain the real religious principles, nor can the demigods or the leaders of Siddhaloka, to say nothing of the asuras, ordinary human beings, Vidyadharas and Caranas. PURPORT

“When challenged by the Visnudutas to describe the principles of religion, the Yamadutas said, veda-pranihito dharmah: the religious principles are the principles enacted in the Vedic literature.” Elsewhere in that same purport, Srila Prabhupada writes: “Herein it is stated that the real religious principle is that which is given by the Supreme Personality of Godhead (Krsna). The principle is stated in the Bhagavad-gita. Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja: that one should give up all other duties and surrender unto the lotus feet of Krsna. That is the real religious principle everyone should follow. Even though one follows Vedic scriptures, one may not know this transcendental principle, for it is not known to everyone. To say nothing of human beings, even the demigods in the upper planetary systems are unaware of it. This transcendental religious principle must be understood from the Supreme Personality of Godhead directly or from His special representative.”

And continuing in the next sloka (SB. 6.3.20-21) the translation reads as follows: Lord Brahma, Bhagavan, Narada, Lord Siva, the four Kumaras, Lord Kapila (the son of Devahuti), Svayambhuva Manu, Prahlada Maharaja, Janaka Maharaja, Grandfather Bhisma, Bali Maharaja, Sukadeva Goswami and I myself (Lord Yamaraja the constable of death), know the real religious principle. My dear servants (the Yamadutas), this transcendental religious principle, which is known as bhagavata-dharma, or surrender unto the Supreme Lord and love for Him, is uncontaminated by the material modes of nature (goodness, passion and ignorance). It is very confidential and difficult for ordinary human beings to understand, but if by chance one fortunately understands it, he is immediately liberated, and thus he returns home, back to Godhead. In addition, according to Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the ultimate religious principle in this age of Kali is the chanting of the holy names of Krsna; Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna, Krsna, Hare, Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama, Rama, Hare, Hare. Thus, religious principles have been explained according to the Vedic law books. For further elucidation and to gain faith and conviction in these conclusions, one must hear and read these ancient Sanskrit texts particularly from the via medium of God, the spiritual master. With Arjuna However, he was seeing God face to face by virtue of the word “svayam” which means “in person.” The conclusion then is that Krsna is the only source of the Vedas and religious principles in general.

He Himself says this in Bg. 15.15: “I am seated in everyone’s heart, and from Me come remembrance, knowledge and forgetfulness. By all the Vedas I am to be known. Indeed, I am the compiler of Vedanta, and I am the knower of the Vedas.” Demons then are basically atheistic in temperament and are averse to not only the laws of God as set forth in the Vedas, but also to the very existence of God. This is due to envy. What of those who are demonic? What are their characteristics? Which brings us full circle to the idea of whose side is God on. According to Lord Krsna Himself, he states in the Bhagavad-gita 16.7-8-9-10-11-12-13-14-16-17: ” Those who are demoniac do not know what is to be done and what is not to be done. Neither cleanliness nor proper behavior nor truth is found in them. They say that this world is unreal, with no foundation, no God in control. They say it is produced of sex desire and has no cause other than lust. Following such conclusions, the demoniac, who are lost to themselves and who have no intelligence, engage in unbeneficial, horrible works meant to destroy the world.” Author’s note: Today, this may indicate terrorism but Srila Prabhupada in his purport to the above sloka stated Bg. 16.9: “Indirectly, this verse anticipates the invention of nuclear weapons, of which the whole world today is very proud. At any moment war may take place, and these atomic weapons may create havoc. Such things are created solely for the destruction of the world, and this is indicated here. Due to Godlessness, such weapons are invented in human society; they are not meant for the peace and prosperity of the world.”

Continuing with Krsna’s statements from the Gita: “Taking shelter of insatiable lust and absorbed in the conceit of pride and false prestige, the demoniac, thus illusioned, are always sworn to unclean work, attracted by the impermanent. They believe to gratify the senses is the prime necessity of human civilization. Thus until the end of life their anxiety is immeasurable. Bound by a network of hundreds of thousands of desires and absorbed in lust and anger, they secure money by illegal means for sense gratification. Thus perplexed by various anxieties and bound by a network of illusions, they become too strongly attached to sense enjoyment and fall down into hell. Self-complacent and always impudent, deluded by wealth and false prestige, they sometimes proudly perform sacrifices in name only, without following any rules and regulations. Bewildered by false ego, strength, pride, lust and anger, the demons become envious of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is situated in their own bodies and in the bodies of others, and blaspheme against the real religion.”

Arjuna, being perplexed about his duty tells Krsna in Bg.1.36: “Sin will overcome us if we slay such aggressors. Therefore it is not proper for us to kill the sons of Dhrtarastra and our friends. What should we gain, O Krsna, husband of the goddess of fortune, and how could we be happy by killing our own kinsmen?” Srila Prabhupada writes in his purport to this verse: Bg.1.36 “According to Vedic injunctions there are six kinds of aggressors: (1) a poison giver (2) one who sets fire to a house (3) one who attacks with deadly weapons (4) one who plunders riches (5) one who occupies another’s land (6) one who kidnaps a wife. Such aggressors are at once to be killed, and no sin is incurred by killing such aggressors. Such killing of aggressors is quite befitting an ordinary man, but Arjuna was not an ordinary person. He was saintly by character, and therefore he wanted to deal with them (the opposing forces) in saintliness. This kind of saintliness, however, is not for a ksatriya. Although a responsible man in the administration of the state is required to be saintly, he should not be cowardly.”

                                          DOES GOD LOVE AMERICA?

Which brings us to the gist of this article. Is God, or Krsna on our side particularly since we are at war with terrorism? We will let God, Krsna decide. This may sound somewhat nationalistic but it’s a fact that America is a great country. God has ordained this so for over 200 years. Compared to other countries around the world we have certain freedoms. We have tolerance and we do not attack other countries unless provoked. There may be political reasons unbeknownst to the citizens as to the whys of a particular nations doing what they do and it is admitted that no country is perfect in that respect, even America. It is also admitted that we are not in “Vedic times” per se and that the current age is filled with bad elements worldwide. All countries are guilty of mass murder in the form of abortions as well as animal and cow slaughter. Collective hard karma awaits all of us living or after the demise of the body. But the facts are this. If indeed it’s as Krsna says in the Vedas that “not a blade of grass moves without His sanction,” then winning World War II and other conflicts throughout the centuries is no accident. But why? I think the main reason is America’s religious tolerance, that is, one’s freedom to practice one’s faith notwithstanding the personal views of others who may be less tolerant or due to ignorance. After all, the “Hare Krishna” movement began in 1966 in the greatest city in the world, New York. The seeds of love of God were planted there by His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada and temples were born that will soon sprout again giving the fruit of love of God, Krsna. In some strange way then, one could say that America has become a “tirtha” or holy place because Srila Prabhupada walked upon its land. If, after careful deliberation the leaders of America imbibe these ancient texts and actually see how these Vedic laws may be enacted in human society then America will truly be a great nation and as Srila Prabhupada once said, the whole world will follow. Will America be victorious? Everything rests with the arrangement of the almighty God.

Time will tell, but as Krsna told Arjuna on the battlefield 5,000 years ago, all the soldiers on both sides are already dead by My arrangement. You be but an instrument in the fighting. Of course, Arjuna and his brothers were the only survivors and Yudhisthira was enthroned as the righteous king. We can only imagine the bodies of millions dead at the end of the battle, the elephants and horses dismembered, the chariots smashed and crushed. One can only imagine a grief-stricken scene of widows walking through the blood-soaked field drenching the ground in an ocean of tears. That is the nature of war. Meanwhile, it should be interesting to note that because Lord Krsna was personally present on the battlefield, all the soldiers slain got liberation. For Krsna, the battle for Him was like a director making a movie and because the soul is eternal, those slain were just changing their bodies. One must understand this very deep and essential point. Once Arjuna realized this fact, he became fearless. The reader may draw their own conclusion.

Note: This article does not condone America’s involvement with the war against terrorism nor does it advocate war in general. Neither does it advocate NOT going to war depending upon circumstances. Rather, it is a response to those who may wonder if violence is ever to be condoned in a civilized society according to time and place. While knowing that these topics are controversial, it is this writer’s opinion only in presenting certain facts based upon Vedic historical evidence.

Book Distribution In NYC after the Bombing

Book Distribution In NYC after the Bombing
This photo of Madhusudana Prabhu (left) and myself appeared in a national Indian newspaper. It shows us distributing Srila Prabhupada’s books in Union Square a few days after the World Trade Center disappeared.

For two days after the bombing the New Yorkers were very disturbed and we could not distribute many books but after that the people were very receptive.

By Srila Prabhupada’s and Krishna’s mercy we were able to distribute many thousands of Srila Prabhupada’s books to the shocked New Yorkers and they very much appreciated it.

INCREDIBLE - Ghadotkach Skeleton Found in India

Bhima's son Ghadotkach-like skeleton found in india.
Ghatotkach is a character in the Mahābhārata epic and the son of Bhima and the giantess Hidimbi (Hidimbaa, classically). His maternal parentage made him half-Rakshasa (giant), and gave him many magical powers that made him an important fighter in theKurukshetra war, the climax of the epic. He got his name from his head, which was hairless and shaped like a pot (in Sanskrit, Ghatammeans pot and "Utkach" means hairless "
Recently a human skeleton of phenomenal size has been discovered during exploration activity somewhere in Northern India.

Exploration activity was taken up by an International Research Organisation with the help of Indian army. The exact place of discovery has not been disclosed yet due to security purpose. But the reports coming indicate of desert area.

Sands and sediments are known to be a good host as preservative of such types of remains.
Seeing the conditions of the less damaged weathered bones it can be inferred that the man either died or buried in the sand near the stream or in a stream bed which may have flowed from the area in the geological past and soon become buried in the sediments or it may be recent.

According to the article published by G. Subramanium in Hindu Voice, the exploration team also found tablets with inscriptions that stated that our God of Indian mythological yore, "Brahma" had created people of phenomenal size the like of which He has not created since. They were very tall, big and very powerful, such that they could put their arms around a tree trunk and uproot it. They were created to bring order among us since we were always fighting with each other. Later these people who were given all the power, turned against all our Gods and transgressed beyond all boundaries set. As a result they were destroyed by God Shiva. The Exploration teambelieves these to be the remains of those people.

This mammoth skeleton reminds us about the Bhima and Hindimba son Ghatotkach of Mahabarata and the found skeleton might have been carrying the genes of those people.
In different ancient texts of Hindu religion mans of enormous size has been mentioned several times in the form of stories. But due to the lack of geological or archaeological evidences such types of stories are always misunderstood.
Lots of stories have been reported from different parts of the world regarding seeing enormous man either in the form of Bigfoot or Himalayan Yeti.
In Hindu religion there is saying that in one of the earliest era (Satyug) of the human civilization the general height of the humans were 22 feet.

Earlier there have been sightings of exceptionally tall creatures with enormous feet (hence the name Bigfoot)and thick covering of hair on their bodies in remote areas of the United States and Canada- in the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachians-from the earliest times onward. Bigfoot is up to 8 feet (2.5 m) tall, stands upright, and is covered in thick reddish-brown hair.

The Himalayan Yeti is another classic cryptid. This world famous creature has actually not been sighted very often. Mostly people find its tracks, which range widely in size between 6 and 18 inches (15-45 cm ) long ( Mysteries of the World by Herbert Genzmer and Ulrich Hellenbrand.

Yet accounts of sightings of this mysterious creature continue right up to the present.
Only by the size of the huge skeleton (not reported earlier) it not easy to jump to any conclusion about relating to any ancient human beings or classifying it to any group. But seeing the size of the skeleton found in northern India risk can be taken it to consider it as extinct GIGANTOPITHECUS.

According to the different research report Gigantopithecus an enormous primate thought to have inhabited southern China and northern India between 12 million and 500,000 years ago. It was described in 1935 on the basis of individual teeth from a Chinese apothecary. Since 1956, four large fossil jawbones have been identified. Based on fossil evidence, paleontologists speculate that Gigantopithecus had an adult standing height of over three meters (ten feet) and a weight of 550 Kg
(1200 lb).

Although it is not known why Gigantopithecus died out, researchers believe that climate and resource competition with better adapted species were the main culprits.

The fossils of prehuman and ancestral human forms are obtained from widely diverse regions of Africa, Asia and Europe which indicates that man’s centre of origin was probably in Asia and Africa. More precisely man has originated in Central Asia, because the oldest known fossils have been obtained from Asia- China, Java and India(Siwalik Hills).

Regarding the present skeleton found in India detail report is still awaited. It may be a missing link or connecting link between ancient man and modern man share.

Modern Atomic Weapons and Ancient Mantra Weapons

As by releasing nuclear weapon there is radiation, similarly, we have got description that when Asvatthama released his brahmastra, there was a big radiation, people were feeling very terrible heat…

Prabhupada:

                             yadasaranam atmanam
                             aiksata sranta-vajinam
                           astram brahma-siro mene
                           atma-tranam dvijatmajah

So this dvijatmaja, son of a brahmana. He’s not addressed as a brahmana because his actions are different. Unless one acts as a brahmana, he’s not accepted as a brahmana. This is the Vedic system. Laksanam.

                               yasya yal laksanam proktam
                                pumso varnabhivyanjakam
                                   yad anyatrapi drsyeta
                                    tat tenaiva vinirdiset

Laksanam. Brahmana’s laksanam, ksatriya’s laksanam. Laksanam means symptoms. One must act as a brahmana. So he is accepted as brahmatmaja. Of course, everyone can claim that his father is like that. But that does not mean he has acquired the father’s qualifications. That is not meaning. And onward the son may claim that “Such and such big man is my father.” Of course, from social point of view, we sometimes give respect, as it will be seen. Asvatthama, because he happened to be a great personality, Dronacarya, so he was excused from capital punishment. Otherwise, Arjuna decided to kill him. But because he was a very great man’s son, guru-putra, considering that “If he dies, then guru’s wife will be very much unhappy,” Draupadi advised… She was unhappy on account of death of her sons. So they considered that Asvatthama’s mother, she’s innocent, but on account of the son’s death, she would be unhappy. So considering all these points he was excused from the capital punishment.

So yada asaranam atmanam aiksata. He was running on on the back of a horse, but when he saw that Arjuna is coming nearer, so he has no other alternative, protection. Then he thought of the brahmastra. Brahmastra is the last weapon. Just like it is similar to modern nuclear weapon, brahmastra. As by releasing nuclear weapon there is radiation, similarly, we have got description that when Asvatthama released his brahmastra, there was a big radiation, people were feeling very terrible heat. And then Krishna informed that “This heat is due to the Asvatthama’s release of brahmastra,” and Arjuna was advised counteract it. Now they do not know how to counteract this nuclear weapon. Formerly they knew. I throw one kind of weapon, and if you are expert, you can counteract it. Now they have discovered the nuclear weapon, but they have not yet discovered the counteraction. Fight means I show some expert fighting craft or experiencing. The opposite party must also show something better than that. That was fighting. And in this way when one party fails, he’s killed. And if he’s killed then war stops. No more war. This was the system.

So Asvatthama was thinking of this brahmastra. Astram brahma-siro mene atma-tranam dvijatmajah. Hopelessly. So far, of course, I know that this nuclear weapon was already discovered by the German people and Hitler, it is said that he did not use it. Because he knew it that “If I throw this nuclear weapon there will be devastation.” So from this point it can be considered that he had some human consideration. So he’s advertised very adversely, but if it is a true fact, then how he could have this human consideration that he did not throw the nuclear weapon? And this was taken by the Americans and it was thrown in Japan. That is the history so far we know. So anyway, as we have got experience, the nuclear weapon is very, very dangerous. Similarly the brahmastra is also very, very dangerous. And another weapon, they knew this art, sabda-vedhi. Sabda-vedhi means if I throw some arrow, it will go to my enemy wherever he is. A little sound of the enemy will attract this weapon, and it is sure to kill my enemy. Sabda-vedhi. There are many instances in Ramayana, Mahabharata. Sabda-vedhi-vak.

So such warfare of mantra, very subtle. This, at the present moment this warfare is carried on gross weapons. But finer than that, there is mantra war. By mantras the warfare can go on. So this warfare is mantra. That is… Just like indriyani parany ahur indriyebhyah param manah. It is said in the Bhagavad-gita that the indriyani, so far our body’s concerned, the indriyas, the senses are prominent. But more important than the senses, above the senses is the mind. Indriyani parany ahur indriyebhyah param manah. So as we have discovered so many weapons… That is gross, to be handled by senses. Even this nuclear weapon, it is handled by the scientists. But it is not by mantra. That science is still to be discovered by the modern scientists, how to… Or just like this mantra. Snake-charming mantra still there are. You are dealing the snake poison with some counter medicine. This is one kind of treatment. But there is another kind of treatment. That is called mantra, by chanting mantra. Or by herbs you can counteract snake bite. Still, there are in India. Therefore Canakya Pandita said that mantrausadhi-vasah sarpah. Sarpa means snake. It can be brought under control by mantra and herbs. Still, in our Mayapura some Mohammedans, they know how to use these herbs and mantras for treating snake bites. In Mayapura there are many snakes, and occasionally snakebite cases are there. But they treat it. And mantra has got power. It has been seen by many medical men in Lucknow. That’s a long story.

So mantra is powerful. This is mundane. Now you can imagine how spiritual mantra is powerful. Even in mundane world the mantra acts. This is very subtle thing. Then how much… Because

                            indriyani parany ahur
                         indriyebhyah param manah
                          manasas tu para buddhir
                         yo buddheh paratas tu sah

So gross understanding–the senses, the body, directly sense perception–this is gross. I see you, you see me. I touch you, you touch me. I taste something… This is gross. Above this gross there is mental platform. So mantra is also on the mental, little above, intelligence. And above that there is spiritual platform. So if on the material platform, mental platform, the mantra can act so wonderfully, how much spiritually the mantra can benefit you. You have to simply imagine. So this Hare Krsna mantra is completely spiritual. If you chant it, spiritually enlightened, then surely it will act. Param vijayate sri-krsna-sankirtanam. It will act. Therefore chanting is so important.

Chanting is not… Narottama dasa Thakura said this sound vibration is not this material sound. Krsna is not material sound. It is Krsna, spiritual. Abhinnatvan nama-naminoh. There is no difference between Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and His holy name, Krsna. There is no difference.

                      nama cintamanih krsnas
                      caitanya-rasa-vigrahah
                   purnah suddho nitya-mukto
                   ‘bhinnatvan nama-naminoh

As Krishna is purna, perfect, complete, suddha, without any material contamination. Purnah suddho nitya, eternal. Purnah suddho nitya-muktah. Mukta means not of this material world. Mukti means anything which does not belong to, in this material world. That is called mukti. So the holy name, chanting of holy name, if we act it properly, without any offense, then we are directly in connection with Krsna. There is no doubt. Purnah suddho nitya-mukto ‘bhinnatvan nama-naminoh.

And Narottama dasa Thakura therefore says that this holy name of Krsna is imported from Goloka Vrndavana. It is not material sound. Golokera prema-dhana hari-nama-sankirtana. It is not ordinary sound. Don’t take it as ordinary. Sabde-samanya buddhir hari-namni. That is naraki-buddhi. Just like to consider the Deity as made of stone. Arcye visnau sila-dhir gurusu nara-matih, to consider guru as ordinary human being. Similarly, to think sabde-samanya buddhih, the holy name of the Lord as ordinary sound vibration, that this… That is naraki. That is not considered by spiritually enlightened persons. But those who are rotting in hellish condition, for them these are the consideration. Patthar puje hari mile(?). They think that they are worshiping patthar. These rascals say patthar puje hari mile to me puju pahada(?). They think, he’s such a rascal, he’s thinking that the Deity is patthar or stone. But it is not like that. It requires good brain to understand how Krsna can appear in a form which can be seen by us. How Krsna can appear in a form of sound which we can hear. It is for our benefit. Not that it is material. Therefore Narottama dasa Thakura says, golokera prema-dhana hari-nama sankirtana. Hari-nama-sankirtana is not ordinary sound. Don’t treat it as ordinary sound. It is the… Just like we, by radio we can send message from Europe, it may come to India. (break) …such powerful machine and you can talk. That is possible. But that is not this sound. Golokera prema-dhana hari-nama-sankirtana, rati na janmilo kene tay. So don’t think that this hari-nama-sankirtana is ordinary vibration of this material world. Never think so. You should immediately see that the sankirtana, Hare Krsna, is Krsna and Radha. Hara and Krsna. Radha-Krsna or Sita-Rama or Laksmi-Narayana. Any form of the Lord Visnu. Hare Krsna means the Supreme Lord and His spiritual potency.

So we address; Hare, “Oh, the energy, spiritual energy of the Lord,” and Krsna, “O the Supreme Lord,” Hare Rama, the same thing. Param Brahman. Rama means Param Brahman, Krsna means Param Brahman and… So what is the meaning of addressing, “He Krsna, He Radhe, He Rama.” Why? There should be some… Why you are asking? That “Just engage me in your service.” That is taught by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

                          ayi nanda-tanuja kinkaram
                  patitam mam visame bhavambudhau
                         krpaya tava pada-pankaja-
                     sthita-dhuli-sadrsam vicintaya

This is our prayer. It is not our prayer that, “O Krsna, O Rama, give me some money, give me some woman.” No. This is not the prayer. Of course, in the neophyte stage they can pray like that, but that is not, I mean to say, suddha-bhakti, pure devotion.

Pure devotion means to pray to the Lord, begging some service. “My Lord, kindly engage me in Your service.” That is the perfection of life, when one is engaged in the service of the Lord in love. You can become a very great saint and live in a secluded place and become puffed-up that you have become very great personality, and people may come to see him, that “He’s not to be seen, he’s engaged in chanting.” My Guru Maharaja has condemned this. He said, mana tumi kisera vaisnava. “My dear mind, your mental concoction, you are thinking that you have become a very big Vaisnava. You do not do anything and sit down in a secluded place and imitating Haridasa Thakura, chanting. So you are a nonsense.” Mana tumi kisera vaisnava. Why? Nirjanera ghare, pratisthara tare. To get some cheap adoration as a great chanter. Because if one is actually chanting, why he should be attracted by woman and bidi? If he is actually in such position like Haridasa Thakura then why he should be attracted by material things? That is a false show only. That is not possible for ordinary person.

Therefore ordinary person must be physically engaged. That is not physical, that is also transcendental. Always busy in some business of Krsna consciousness. That is wanted. Not that, “Oh, I have become a great scholar and I have now learned how to become a great Vaisnava. I chant sixty-four rounds, and think of my wife somewhere, and then good-bye to Govindaji and leave Vrndavana.” These rascaldom do not follow. Govindaji drives such rascals away from Vrndavana. So Vrndavana, one who is living in Vrndavana, he must be very anxious how to spread the glories of Vrndavana-candra all over the world. That is wanted. Not that Vrndavana-candra is my private property and I sit down in a place and lick up. No, that is not wanted. That is not wanted. That is condemned by my Guru Maharaja.

So mana tumi kisera vaisnava. He says, “What kind of Vaisnava, rascal, you are.” Nirjanera ghare pratisthara tare. “Simply for cheap adoration you are living in a secluded place.” Tava hari-nama kevala kaitava. Your chanting of so-called Hare Krsna mantra is simply cheating. He has said that. One must be ready very vigorously. And that is Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s also order. Caitanya Mahaprabhu never said that “You chant.” He has given certainly the chanting, but so far His mission is concerned, He said that “Everyone of you become guru.” Amara ajnaya guru hana tara’ ei desa. And deliver, preach, that people understand what is Krsna.

                   yare dekha, tare kaha ‘krsna’-upadesa
amara ajnaya guru hana tara’ ei desa

Prthivite ache yata nagaradi. That is His mission. It is not that “Become a big Vaisnava and sit down and imitate.” This is all rascaldom. So don’t follow this thing. So at least we cannot advise you in that way. We have learned from our Guru Maharaja that preaching is very, very important thing, and when one is actually an experienced preacher, then he is able to chant Hare Krsna mantra without any offense. Before that, this so-called chanting of Hare Krsna mantra, you may practice without any offenses… And giving up all other business to make a show of a big Vaisnava, that is not required. Thank you very much. (end)

His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Nothing happens without the sanction of God

It is often said, Not a blade of grass moves without the sanction of the Supreme Lord, and that is a fact. Nothing happens without the sanction of God. There is an English saying, Man proposes and God disposes. This is correct because we can’t fulfill any of our desires without the sanction of Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Sometimes, when we meet Christians and explain this to them, they find it difficult to believe. They question there are many sinful people whose desires are evil. There are child molesters, murders, rapists, all sorts of criminal people. So they ask, “Is God sanctioning the desires of all these sinful people? Is God enabling these people to perform these heinous acts?” The answer is yes, God is sanctioning these peoples desires and He is enabling them to do these sinful things because without the sanction of God they couldn’t perform the sinful activities.

One can become quite bewildered in understanding this, “How is it that God, who is all good is allowing these people to perform sinful activities?” The answer is God doesn’t want them to perform sinful activities but He has given us a little independence. He doesn’t interfere with our little independence. If we have a desire to perform sinful activities, although God doesn’t want us to, He also doesn’t want to interfere with our independence. So He lets us fulfil our sinful desires but He does it in such a way that ultimately we become frustrated and surrender to Him to regain our natural position as His servant.

We can’t get away with anything because as human beings we have some independence to act as we desire therefore we are also responsible for our actions. This responsibility means if we perform sinful activities we have to suffer the reaction in the future. These reactions could take the form of disease, legal implications, suffering from natural disasters or loss of our money, beauty or prestigious position. The ultimate suffering is at the time of death when we are sent to one of the many hellish planets for a long, long time. The lord of death, Yamaraja, comes for sinful people and forcibly drags them to hell where they have to endure unimaginable pain to atone for their sins. After suffering in this way for a long time they are allowed to take birth on this earth again to “have another go at it.”

The desires we have for pleasure in this world will never satisfy us. We can try anything in this world, but we will never be satisfied. If one is thoughtful, after many, many births of frustration, he will come to think, “This material world not so good because no matter what I do I am not happy.” Then he will think, “There must be something else, there must be an other place.” He can then come to the spiritual platform.

Terrorists in England

You write that things are in a crises in England, with oil shortages and IRA bombing. Therefore, we have to take shelter of Krishna. If Krishna wants to kill us, that is not wrong, if it is His desire. Our business should just be to follow the regulative schedule, deity worship, distributing prasadam, chanting, book distribution and never mind the material danger. Krishna Consciousness means to be on the platform of

Yogesvara: One problem that seems to be occurring more and more frequently is the appearance of terrorists, that is to say, men who are motivated for some political reasons.

Prabhupada: Yes, I have already explained the whole basic principle. Because they are animals, so sometimes ferocious animal. That’s all. There are different types of animals- tigers and lions. So if some animal comes as very ferocious, that is not very astonishing. After all, you are living in an animal society.

The only solution is that you become an ideal human being. Either a tiger comes or elephant comes, but you don’t become an animal. Counteract. That is required.

A human being is called a rational animal. You come to rationality, that is required. If you remain also another type of animal, that will not help you. You have to become actually human being.

These people do not know what the aim of human life is. So their animal propensities are being adjusted this way, that way, this way, that way. Just like they go to see naked dance. The animal propensity—he is seeing his wife daily naked, and still he is going to see naked dance, and paying some fees. Because they have no engagement except this animalism. Is it not?

A dog is simply chewing one bone, this way, that way, this way, that way. Because he is an animal he has no other engagement. So this whole society is like an animal. Especially the westerners have developed a civilization based on animal propensities: “I am this body, and the best use of my life is to gratify my senses.” This is animal.

You have to introduce a real human civilization. You should not be surprised if animals in different shapes and different capacities come out. As the dog is thinking, “I am dog, very stout and strong dog,” so a man is thinking, “I am big nation.” But what is the basic principle? A dog is thinking on the basis of his body, and this big nation is also thinking on the basis of body. So there is no difference between this dog and this big nation. The only difference is that a human being, by nature’s gift, has got better senses. There is no education to utilize the better senses to advance spiritually and get out of this material world. He is simply using that better intelligence for animalism. Now we have to counteract this for the benefit of the human civilization. (Letter Jan.1 1974, Morning walk May 28, 1974 Rome)

O dear Lord Krishna, O eternal Deity of transcendental bliss and knowledge, You are imperishable, and we offer our respectful obeisances unto Your lotus feet. It is by Your causeless mercy that we have been released from the imprisonment of Jarasanda, but now we pray that You release us from imprisonment within material existence, Your illusory energy. We now have sufficient experience of the miserable material life in which we are fully absorbed, and having tasted its bitterness, we have come to take shelter under Your lotus feet. (The imprisoned kings-Krsna Book)
