Police Arrest Devotees for Chanting Hare Krishna on Oxford Street

Chanting on Oxford Street

It was the Thursday before Christmas, and London’s Oxford Street was brimming over with Christmas shoppers. Twice already that week plainclothes police had arrested devotees chanting Hare Krishna there, but today we were intending to avoid any trouble…

“Come on!” the constable said. “You know as well as I do you’re causing an obstruction. Down to the station; you’re all under arrest! “Obstruction?” we protested. “All around you there’s drug addiction, prostitution, crime, and violence, and you can’t find anything better to do than arrest us for chanting the names of God! What kind of policemen are you?

                                                               The Arrest

It was the Thursday before Christmas, and London’s Oxford Street (the longest shopping street in the world) was brimming over with Christmas shoppers. Twice already that week plainclothes police had arrested devotees chanting Hare Krishna there, but today we were intending to avoid any trouble. The five of us took a new route, profusely distributing the holy name to everyone within earshot. As we made our way through Piccadilly Circus (London’s “Times Square”) and then along crowded Regent Street, we brought smiles to many faces and raised eyebrows on many others. Finally we reached Oxford Circus, where we reluctantly stopped chanting and started back along Oxford Street toward the temple.

But all the shops were staying open late, so the street was still filled with pedestrians, though traffic had died down. The rustle of hundreds of footsteps filled the air. With so many materially conditioned souls surrounding us, there we were, chanting quietly to ourselves on our beads, and just holding our karatalas (hand cymbals) and mrdanga drums! It was hard to restrain ourselves from the loud glorification oi the Hare Krishna maha-mantra. In fact, it was impossible! Casting aside any thoughts of our inevitable arrest, we launched into the most ecstatic chant ever! The tall buildings echoed to the sounds of Lord Caitanya’s sarikirtana party while dumbfounded shoppers stood open-mouthed and bus lines of bewildered souls turned their heads to see the source of the transcendental sound vibrations. Single file, we chanted and danced along the clear space at the edge of the pavement, which widened as the crowds thinned out. Tottenham Court Road Tube Station, the end of the gauntlet, loomed up ahead. We were almost there, with no police trouble, when three highly suspicious figures suddenly appeared, blocking our path a few yards ahead.

“All right, lads, yer nicked!” said the young “student,” flashing his police I.D. card with immense relish.

“What! How can you arrest us? We’re not doing anything illegal.”

His two hard-faced confederates, similarly disguised, moved in closer.

“Come on! You know as well as I do you’re causing an obstruction. Down to the station; you’re all under arrest!”

“Obstruction? The pavement’s fifteen feet wide, we’re walking in the gutter, and there’s hardly anybody to ‘obstruct’!” we protested. “All around you there’s drug addiction, prostitution, crime, and violence, and you can’t find anything better to do than arrest us for chanting the names of God! What kind of policemen are you?”

The retort seemed to catch him by surprise, but he quickly regained his composure and barked, “Look lad, you’re under arrest. Anything you say may be used as evidence. Now move!” Then, adding a liberal quantity of unsavory words (quite unbefitting a constable of Her Majesty’s Police Force), he joined his two colleagues in forming a rear guard, and the three of them escorted us toward the police station.

We were thinking of how unfortunate they were. Not only were they obstructing Lord Caitanya’s sankirtana party and harassing devotees, but these were the same policemen who had arrested the chanting party twice earlier that week! What demons! For protection we started chanting the glories of Lord Nrsimhadeva–Krishna’s half-man-half-lion incarnation–very softly at first, and then a little louder. The mrdanga crept in, marking the rhythm, and the karatalas soon followed. With no complaints from our police escort as yet, we chanted louder and louder until the street once more resounded with the holy names. Amazed that they made no objection, we turned and saw that the three policemen were grinning from ear to ear! We were incredulous. Here was the mercy of Lord Caitanya! By repeatedly arresting the chanting party, these previously offensive policemen had become purified by associating with devotees, and now they were taking great pleasure in the chanting of the holy names!

“Now stop or you’ll cause an obstruction,” directed our police guide as we approached a large bus line, which engulfed the pavement. We obediently stopped, considering it our good fortune that we had been allowed to chant at all.

Then something totally unexpected happened. After we had passed the bus line, our captor definitely proved himself to be no ordinary police constable when he ordered, “Okay, start chanting again.”!!

So we did, all the way to the police station, accompaned by the three blissful police constables, who, grinning from ear to ear, made no objection as the ecstatic sankirtana party passed right into the police station, past the main doors, through the hallway, and into the charging room itself!!!

Everyone was thunderstruck. Arrestors and arrested alike couldn’t believe it. Shaven-headed Hare Krishnas chanting their way into the cop shop? With drums and cymbals? It was unthinkable! The sergeant on duty turned a vivid scarlet and exploded in a fit of anger, threatening to “throw the book” at us and charge us with all manner of subversive criminal activities. We apologized profusely, pleading that we didn’t quite realize where we were, and he became somewhat pacified. As we answered philosophical questions from some of the interested constables, the sergeant charged us with obstruction, one by one, and we had to wait as he filled in numerous forms.

“All right, boys, tomorrow morning at ten o’clock you’ll be appearing in the Magistrates Court,” said the sergeant, now quite amiable. And with that he allowed us to go. Feeling very blissful at the way things had turned out, we filed into the hallway and prepared to return to the temple for the evening arati (temple worship) of Their Lordships Sri Sri Radha-London-isvara. (London-isvara means “Krishna, the Lord of London.”) On our way out of the station, we passed a high-ranking plainclothes detective inspector. He paused and turned in our direction. Not knowing what to expect, we were surprised when he glanced over us in an almost fatherly way and said in a concerned voice, “Don’t be discouraged, lads; keep up the good work!”

Next morning in court we pleaded “not guilty” to the charges against us, and the judge deferred our case to February 2. At the time, we were unaware of the significance of the appointed date. Our trial was to be on the appearance day of Lord Nityananda–the incarnation of God who helped spread Lord Caitanya’s sankirtana movement, and who personifies His mercy.

                                                                      The Trial

As is customary on such holy days, the five of us fasted through the morning of Lord Nityananda’s appearance day and chanted His glories. At noon we attended a blissful arati and then broke our fast with a splendid feast. Afterward, we set off for Great Marlborough Street Magistrates Court, confident that Lord Nityananda would protect us. We were accompanied by a new and enthusiastic visitor to the temple, the Reverend Norman Morehouse (second only to the Bishop of Norwich), who came along to observe the court proceedings.

We arrived at the courthouse a few minutes before our appointed time of 2:00 P.M. and waited in the big hallway while the Reverend went through to the public gallery. The plainclothesmen who arrested us soon turned up, now in uniform, and waited with us. (It took a little persuasion before they cautiously took some of the hazelnut cookies we had earlier offered to Lord Nityananda.) At last we were beckoned into the courtroom itself and ushered into the dock. A stir went through the assembly. Shaven heads and saffron robes were the last thing anyone expected to see i
n Magistrates Court on a Tuesday afternoon. The Magistrate (a balding, portly man in his late middle age, sporting a red rose in the lapel of his dark grey suit) surveyed us over the top of his goldrimmed spectacles. After we reaffirmed our plea of “not guilty” to the court clerk, one of the constables, who had been sworn in at the witness box, proceeded to report the alleged conditions of our arrest.

In the constable’s version of the story, the chanting party miraculously grew from the original five members to seven–and later to eight when he described how three devotees “ran off and escaped arrest.” According to his description, it seemed that there were many more people on Oxford Street than we had been aware of. Indeed, we had supposedly forced unlimited numbers of pedestrians into the road and had exposed them to the grave risk of being run over by the almost nonexistent traffic! The judge listened impartially and then, since we had no lawyer to speak on our behalf, he asked us if we would like to comment on the policeman’s evidence. We humbly pointed out that the constable, like everyone else, had imperfect senses, and that he had contradicted himself in assessing the number of devotees on the chanting party. The judge politely suggested the constable had made “a mathematical error.” At this a titter of laughter rippled through the courtroom, while the constable shuffled his feet and looked embarrassed.

The magistrate then asked if we would like to speak in our own defense. Having been previously chosen as spokesman, I stepped forward to be sworn in at the witness box–and was taken aback when the usher asked me to hold a copy of the Bhagavad-gita in my right hand. He handed me a card, and I read out the words: “I swear by almighty Sri Krishna that the evidence I give shall be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”

Heartened by smiles from the devotees in the dock, I began to describe the circumstances of our arrest–this time as they actually had happened. The magistrate listened as I went on to say, “We understand that the police have a duty to perform, sir; but we also have a duty. We have been instructed by our spiritual master–indeed, we are instructed by all the principle scriptures of the world–the Koran, the Torah, the Bible, and the Vedas–that we should glorify God by chanting His holy names. Whether you know the Lord by the name of Allah, Jehovah, Rama, Govinda, or Krishna, God is one.”

“Oh, quite so, quite so,” affirmed the magistrate.

Encouraged, I went on: “In the Vedic scriptures, in the Brhan-Naradiya Purana, it is said, harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam–

“In English–but what does it mean in English, please?” he interjected.

“–Kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha. This was written in the Sanskrit language five thousand years ago. It means, ‘In this age of Kali [the present age of materialism and quarrel] there is no alternative, there is no alternative, there is no alternative for making positive spiritual advancement but the chanting of the holy name, the holy name, the holy name of the Lord.’”

The judge–in fact the whole courtroom–sat there fascinated. I remembered Srila Prabhupada’s introduction to the Srimad-Bhagavatam and began to speak further.

“Although mankind has made great material advancement in so many spheres, we can see that factually there is a fault in the social body at large. People are not happy with their day-to-day activities, and there is an increasing disturbance of drug addiction, prostitution, violence, and crime. The root of the problem is lack of God consciousness. People are unaware of the actual purpose of life.”

Intrigued by this sound philosophy coming from the witness box, the judge relaxed his judicial appearance, sat back, and took a sip of water from his glass.

Even more encouraged, I asked, “Sir, with your permission, I would like to read a short passage that appeared in the London Observer in October 1972. It is an excerpt from an article written by that eminent English historian, Arnold Toynbee.”

Upon hearing the name of such a distinguished personality, the judge smiled slightly, and nodding his head in approval, he asked that I continue.

“‘The cause of it [the world's malady] is spiritual. We are suffering from having sold our souls to the pursuit of an objective which is both spiritually wrong and practically unobtainable. We have to reconsider our objective and change it. And until we do this, we shall not have peace, either amongst ourselves or within each of us.’”

I continued, “As devotees of the Lord we strictly follow four principles: mercifulness, truthfulness, cleanliness, and austerity. These are the higher qualities of human life, and the absence of these qualities means the degradation of society. So the spreading of spiritual understanding among humanity at large is the highest welfare work. And an essential part of this program is the distribution of literature, and the congregational chanting–in the street–of the holy names of God.”

“Is that all?” inquired the judge.

“Yes, sir,” I replied.

“Then you may step down.” Adjusting his spectacles and regarding the devotees, who were once more assembled in the dock, the judge then said in a very firm yet amicable manner, “In legal terms you are guilty of obstruction, although it is of a very minor degree. Taking this into consideration, and seeing your obvious sincerity, I have decided to dismiss the case.”

We smiled jubilantly, thanked the magistrate, and were about to step down, when Kr na prompted me to add, “Sir, we were wondering if you had a court library here, in which case we would like to present a book for addition to the collection.”

“Thank you,” he replied. “I am quite sure we can accommodate it.”

I gave a copy of Srila Prabhupada’s Sri Isopanisad to one of the clerks, who promised to pass it on to the judge. Then we left the courtroom, thanking Lord Nityananda for His mercy.

Outside, our friend Reverend Morehouse greeted us with an ecstatic “Hare Krishna!” Beaming from ear to ear, he took each of us warmly by the hand. “Congratulations!” he exclaimed. “It was wonderful! I am so proud of you all. I must say, though, I was somewhat surprised at the decision of the judge. In the cases before yours he had been quite severe. I’m sure that the Lord must have had a hand in the matter.”

And so were we. Sankirtana is always successful, but it is especially so on Lord Nityananda’s appearance day: even a judge will take a book!

On the way back to the temple, I read one verse in Srila Prabhupada’s Caitanya-caritamrta that summed up our whole wonderful experience:

aparadha ksamaila dubila prema-jalekeba edaibe prabhura prema-mahajale

“Lord Caitanya excused all the offenders, and they merged into the ocean of love of God, for no one can escape the unique loving network of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu” (Cc. Adi-lila, 7.37).

Do I have to give up my occupation to serve Krishna?

Krishna-Balaram-and-Cowherd-Boys-return-with-the-cows

Krishna does not suggest anything impractical

So Krishna is not advising Arjuna to simply remember Him and give up his occupation. No. Krishna never suggests anything impractical. In this material world, in order to maintain the body, one has to work.

Human society is divided into four divisions of social order: brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya and sudra. The brahmana class, or intelligent class, is working in one way, the ksatriya class or administrative class is working in another way and the mercantile class and laborers are all tending to their specific duties.

In human society, whether one is a laborer, merchant, warrior, administrator or farmer, or even if one belongs to the highest class and is a literary man, a scientist or a theologian, he has to work in order to maintain his existence.

Krishna advises Arjuna not to give up his occupation

Krishna, therefore tells Arjuna that he need not give up his occupation, but while he is engaged in his occupation, he should remember Krishna. If he doesn’t practice remembering Krishna when he is struggling for existence, then it will not be possible for him to remember Krishna at the time of death.

Lord Caitanya also advises this. He says that one should practice remembering the Lord by chanting the names of the Lord always. The names of the Lord and the Lord are nondifferent. So Lord Krishna’s instruction to Arjuna to “remember Me” and Lord Caitanya’s injunction to always “chant the names of Lord Krishna” are the same instruction. There is no difference, because Krishna and Krishna’s name are nondifferent.

Remembering Krishna while working

Therefore we have to practice remembering Krishna always, twenty-four hours a day, by chanting His names and moulding our life’s activities in such a way that we can remember Him always.

How is this possible? The acharyas give the following example. If a married woman is attached to another man, or if a man has an attachment for a women other than his wife, then the attachment is to be considered very strong. One with such an attachment is always thinking of the loved one. The wife who is thinking of her lover is always thinking of meeting him, even while she is carrying out her household chores. In fact she carries out her household work even more carefully so her husband will not suspect her attachment.

In the same way as the married woman who is attached to another man is remembering her lover constantly but she is still carrying out her duties in her husband’s house, we should constantly remember the supreme lover, Sri Krishna, and at the same time perform our material duties very nicely.

A strong sense of love is required here. If we have a strong sense of love for the Supreme Lord then we can discharge our duty and at the same time remember Him. But we have to develop that sense of love for Krishna.

Arjuna, for instance, was always thinking of Krishna; he was the constant companion of Krishna, and at the same time he was a warrior. Krishna did not advise Arjuna to go to the forest and meditate. When Lord Krishna explained the meditational yoga system to Arjuna he says that the practice of this system is not possible for him.

“Arjuna said, O Madhusudana, the system of yoga which you have summarized appears impracticle and unendurable to me. For the mind is restless and unsteady.” (Bhagavad Gita 6.33)

The best yogi

However, Krishna replies to Arjuna, encouraging him:

“Of all yogis, he who abides in Me with great faith, worshipping Me in transcendental loving service, is most intimatily united with Me in yoga and is the highest of all.” (Bhagavad Gita 6.47)

So one who is always thinking of the Supreme Lord, Krishna, is the greatest yogi, the supermost jnani and the greatest devotee at the same time.

Krishna goes on to tell Arjuna that, as a ksatriya, he can not give up fighting, but that if he fights remembering Krishna, then he will be able to remember Krishna at the time of  death. However to do this one must be completely surrendered to Krishna in the transcendental loving service of the Lord.

We actually work with our mind and intelligence, not with our body.  So if our intelligence and mind is always engaged in the thoughts of the Supreme Lord, Krishna then naturally the senses are also engaged in His service.

Superficially it may appear that the activities of our senses remain the same performing devotional service to our activities in sense gratification, however the consciousness is changed. The Bhagavad Gita teaches us how we can absorb our minds and intelligence in the thought of Krishna. Such absorbtion will enable one to transfer himself to the kingdom of the Lord. If the mind is engaged in Krishna’s service, then the senses are automatically engaged in His service. This is the art, and this is also the secret of Bhagavad Gita: total absorbtion in the thought of Sri Krishna.

Try to advance spiritually

Modern man has struggled very hard to reach the moon, but he has not tried very hard to elevate himself spiritually. If one has fifty years of life ahead of him, he should engage that brief time in cultivating this practice of remembering the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

The easiest way

The easiest way to remember Krishna is hearing Bhagavad Gita from the realized person, this will turn one’s thoughts to the Supreme Being. This will lead toremembering the Supreme Lord, and will enable one, upon leaving the body, to attain a spiritual body which is just fit for association with Krishna in the spiritual world. Krishna says:

“By practising this remembering, without being deviated, thinking ever of the Supreme Godhead, one is sure to achieve the planet of the Divine, the Supreme Personality, O son of Kunti.” (Bhagavad Gita 8.8)
This is not a very difficult process. However, one must learn it from an experienced person, from one who is already in the practice. The mind is always flying to this and that, but one must always practice concentrating the mind on the form of the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna or on the sound of His name.
Controlling the restless mind

The mind is naturally restless, going hither and thither, but it can rest in the sound vibration of Krishna. One must thus meditate onthe Supreme Person; and thus attain Him. The ways and the means for ultimate realization, ultimate attainment, are stated in the Bhagavad Gita, and the doors of this knowledge are open for everyone. No one is barred out. Everyone can approach Krishna by thinking of Him, for hearing and thinking of Him is possible for everyone.

Even human beings in the lower statuses of life can attain the Supreme. One does not need highly developed intelligence. The point is that anyone who accepts the principle of bhakti-yoga and accepts the Supreme Lord as the summum bonum of life, as the highest target, the ultimate goal, can approach the Lord in the spiritual sky. If one adopts the principles enunciated in Bhagavad Gita, he can make his life perfect and make a perfect solution to all the problems of life which arise out of the transient nature of material existence. This is the sum and substance of the entire Bhagavad Gita.
Conclusion

In conclusion, Bhagavad Gita is a transcendental literature which one should read very carefully. It is capable of saving one from all fear.

“In this endeavor there is no loss or diminution, and a little advancement on this path can protect one from the most dangerous type of fear.” (Bg. 2.40) If one reads Bhagavad Gita sincerely and seriously, then all of the reactions of his past misdeeds will not react upon him. In the last portion of Bhagavad Gita, Lord Sri Krishna proclaims:

“Give up all varieties of religiousness, and just surrender unto Me; and in return I shall protect you from all sinful reactions. Therefore, you have nothing to fear.” (Bg. 18.66) Thus the Lord takes all responsibility for one who surrenders unto Him, and He indemnifies all the reactions of sin.We are very busy… Reading Gita is enough…

One cleanses himself daily by taking a bath in water, but one who takes his bath only once in the sacred Ganges water of the Bhagavad Gita cleanses away all the dirt of material life. Because Bhagavad Gita is spoken by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one need not read any other Vedic literature. One need only attentively and regularly hear and read Bhagavad Gita. In the present age, mankind is so absorbed with mundane activities that it is not possible to read all of the Vedic literatures. But this is not necessary. This one book, Bhagavad-gita, will suffice because it is the essence of all Vedic literatures and because it is spoken by the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Bhagavad Gita — More important than the Ganges river

It is said that one who drinks the water of the Ganges certainly gets salvation, but what to speak of one who drinks the waters of Bhagavad Gita? Gita is the very nectar of the Mahabharata spoken by Visnu Himself, for Lord Krishna is the original Visnu. It is nectar emanating from the mouth of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and the Ganges is said to be emanating from the lotus feet of the Lord. Of course there is no difference between the mouth and the feet of the Supreme Lord, but in our position we can appreciate that the Bhagavad Gita is even more important than the Ganges.

The Bhagavad Gita is just like a cow, and Lord Krishna, who is a cowherd boy, is milking this cow. The milk is the essence of the Vedas, and Arjuna is just like a calf. The wise men, the great sages and pure devotees, are to drink the nectarean milk of Bhagavad Gita.
One Scripture, One God, One Religion

In this present day, man is very eager to have one scripture, one God, one religion, and one occupation. So let there be one common scripture for the whole world--Bhagavad Gita. And let there be one God only for the whole world-Sri Krishna. And one mantra only-Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. And let there be one work only–the service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Is It Compulsory for a Serious Devotee to Live in a Temple?

Is It Compulsory for a Serious Devotee to Live in a Temple?
I want to know that whether it is compulsory for a person, who is serious in Krishna Consciousness, to become a full time devotee or he can perform his duties being a congregational devotee?
Hari Bol — Srijana

Dear Srijan

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Shree Guru & Gauranga!

I have been requested by Shreeman Madhuvisha Dasa to respond to your inquiry.

Srila Prabhupada himself said that he did not live in a Temple. When asked about devotees not living in the Temple he responded by saying that it doesn’t matter whether one lives in a temple or outside… both must follow all the rules and regulations. According to my understanding of Krishna consciousness, it is a gradual process… It is as gradual as we want to make it.

The basic principle of Krishna consciousness is hearing and chanting. This can be done inside or outside of the Temple, but hearing and chanting is best done in the association of devotees. In the absence of others association, it can be done alone, privately. But hearing and chanting about Krishna must be done every day, as much as possible.

Srila Prabhupada compared living in a temple to a businessman who does much more business at the New York Stock Exchange, rather than hundreds of miles away. He compared ISKCON temples to “the stock of exchange of devotional service.” Lord Chaitanya stressed that association of devotees is paramount in regards to making advancement in Krishna consciousness. Indeed, Srila Prabhupada created ISKCON temples just for that purpose, so that devotees would benefit from each other’s association. One may live outside of the Temple, but one must not live apart from the association of devotees. Srila Prabhupada created the ISKCON Life Membership program and Sunday Feast program especially for those potential devotees, who, due to circumstances, could not live in a Temple. Srila Prabhupada also recognized that in the future, most people would not live in a Temple. Srila Prabhupada envisioned a world in Krishna consciousness. Obviously, the entire world can not live in even all of the ISKCON Temples we already have (almost 400 world-wide). Therefore, Srila Prabhupada said that only 50% of his mission was complete. The other 50% is what he described as “varnashrama” where people, not living in an ISKCON Temple, maintain Krishna consciousness while executing their material duties.

Herein lies the essential answer to your question. Although you may not wish to live in an ISKCON Temple, you have to make your own home a Temple by following all the rules and regulations, as if you were living in a Temple. As I said at the outset, Krishna consciousness is a gradual process. That gradual process is known as yukta-vairagya and also vairagya-vidya.

First we must understand what is the ultimate goal of Krishna consciousness. Once the ultimate goal is understood, everything else falls into place naturally and automatically. The ultimate goal is to feel love of Godhead in every sphere of one’s existential living condition. Love of Godhead is achieved by hearing and chanting without offense. In order to hear and chant offenselessly, one must become detached from material sense gratification. At first one vows to strictly follow the four prohibitions, namely, no eating of meat, fish and eggs, no sex outside of marriage for procreation, no intoxication, including even coffee, tea and cigarettes, what to speak of alcohol and other intoxicants or controlled substances, and no gambling. But this is just the beginning of what is called vairagya or detachment. As one naturally progresses day by day, year by year, one learns to become disinterested in the entire materialistic way of life centered around identification with the body.

There are so many unwanted things we become entangled in simply because of identification with the body. These unwanted things are known as “anarthas”. As one progresses in Krishna consciousness one become more and more keen to root out all unnecessary engagements, attachments, and entanglements which the devotee understands by hearing and chanting are impeding his/her ultimate success in achieving love of God. Finally, one completely surrenders without reservation to Krishna and is then able to taste love of God, the highest possible state of consciousness for the living being.

Hearing and chanting, means hearing and chanting from Srila Prabhupada’s main books, namely Bhagavad-gita, Srimad-Bhagavatam, Nectar of Devotion & Chaitanya-charitamrita.

But one must do all of this in the association of other devotees. So if one does not live in a temple, one must find time to associate with devotees either by visiting the Temple, or attending functions in other’s homes where devotees congregate. Here in Southern California I conduct weekend seminars at different peoples’ homes where this hearing and chanting is done from 2-4 hours. I also do not live in a Temple, but following Srila Prabhupada’s instructions, I make sure that every weekend, I am in the association of devotees.

I hope this answers your inquiry. If you have any further questions, please email me directly.

The Old Woman in the Woods

The Old Woman in the Woods
There is that story that one old woman, she was suffering. And she had to collect woods from the forest and sell in the market. So one day, how do you say, she was praying to Krsna, or God, that “Kindly help me. I am in very poverty-stricken.” So one day, she was carrying that load of fuel. It fell down. . .

[Selected excerpt from a morning walk with AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada March 6, 1974, Mayapura]

Prabhupada: . . .But everyone thinking that “If I could become like this, I would have been happy.” So Krsna gives all chance. “All right, you become this.” This is transmigration. This is transmigration. [break] …yathandhair upa… We are thinking something like that, and Krsna is giving us chance, ‘All right, you take this chance; you become like this.” Ye yatha mam prapadyante. But it will not make you happy. Therefore ultimately says, sarva-dharman. ‘You give up all this rascaldom. What I speak, you can accept. That is your dharma.” Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam… [Bg. 18.66]. That will be beneficial for you, the most confidential instruction.

There is that story that one old woman, she was suffering. And she had to collect woods from the forest and sell in the market. So one day, how do you say, she was praying to Krsna, or God, that ‘Kindly help me. I am in very poverty-stricken.” So one day, she was carrying that load of fuel. It fell down. So nobody was there to help her. So she began to cry, ‘Who will help me?” So she began to pray to God ‘Kindly help me.” And God came: ‘What do you want?” ‘Who are you, Sir?” ‘I am God.” ‘Kindly help me to take this burden on my head.” Yes. ‘All right.” From God, she’s asking, ‘Please help me to get this burden on my head.” That’s all.

So everyone is going on, ‘Let family be very happy, my son be married. He may… Let him pass MA examination.” But it is the same thing, ‘Give me the burden on my head.” This is the prayer. Mudhah. Na mam prapadyante mudhah [Bg. 7.15]. The life was meant for understanding Krsna and worship Him, and she’s asking, ‘Give me the burden on my head.” Therefore mudha, rascal, fool. She’s asking something which will never make her happy, even by merging into the effulgence, Brahman effulgence. It will never make her happy. But she does not know. Therefore she’s mudha, rascal.

Siddha-svarupananda: That’s a very clear example.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Siddha-svarupananda: Very clear.
Prabhupada: Yes. Everyone is asking, ‘Please help me to get this burden on my head.” Everyone is asking. [break] Krsna mantra means asking nothing from Krsna, but only praying, ‘Please engage me in Your service.” This is Hare Krsna. Now let him engage, whatever service He likes. I don’t dictate that ‘Give me this service.” That is also sense gratification. As soon as I’ll say that ‘Engage me in this type of service,” that is also sense gratification. When one surrenders fully that ‘Engage me in Your service in whatever way You like,” that is pure devotion. You cannot dictate Krsna. Because He wants, sarva-dharman… ‘First of all surrender, then I will give you. I will allot what kind of service you can do.” Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam, aham tvam sarva… [Bg. 18.66].

But if I dictate, then Krsna will be…, ‘All right, you take this.” Then you again become unhappy. Don’t dictate Krsna. Be dictated. That is happiness. But everyone is dictating, ‘Please give me this. Give me this. Give me that. Give me that. Give me this.” Why should you dictate Krsna? As soon as I dictate, that is my sense gratification. That is not pure devotion. Anyabhilasita-sunyam. Anyabhilasita-sunyam [BRS 1.1.11]. Make zero all your desires. It doesn’t matter, this desire or that desire. Any kind of desire. Whatever you desire, that is material. Anyabhilasita-sunyam [Madhya 19.167]. That is pure devotee.
Devotee: That takes practice.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Devotee: That takes practice, to stop desiring for oneself.
Prabhupada: Yes. And therefore…
Devotee: You have to practice…
Prabhupada: …the practice is that you should simply desire what your spiritual master says. Don’t desire yourself. Yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasadah **. If you fulfill the desires of your spiritual master, then Krsna will be pleased.” Because he’s the representative, the immediate representative, boss, if you satisfy him, the master, supreme master, is also satisfied. If he gives report, ‘This clerk is doing nice,” that is sufficient. Yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasadah **. This is the injunction.
Jayapataka: So human life was no advantage. Only because you have come, now it can be advantage.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Jayapataka: Human life is no special advantage. Only if you come, the spiritual master comes, then it can be some advantage.
Prabhupada: Yes. Therefore Vedic injunction is gurum eva abhigacchet: ‘You must go to a bona fide spiritual master if you want to make your life perfect.” There is no question whether I shall go or not. ‘You must!” That is the beginning of human life. Otherwise animal life. He has no spiritual master. He’s not going to obey anyone. He’s working in his own whims. That is animal life. Real life here begins.
tad-vijnanartham sa gurum eva abhigacchet
samit-panih srotriyam brahma-nistham
[MU 1.2.12]

This is the Vedic injunction. You cannot do anything without abiding the orders of spiritual master. That is surrender. How nice water it is. [break] And there are many thousands, you’ll find. And we are thinking, ‘Oh, if I go away, who will feed my son? Who will feed my daughter?” He’ll never think that ‘If so many animals are fed by the Supreme,” eko yo bahunam vidadhati kaman, ‘He’s supplying all the necessity why not for me or for my other children?” It is maya that one thinks that ‘Without me…,” Just like Gandhi was thinking. Unless he was killed… He was always thinking, ‘Without me, India will be spoiled.” India will be spoiled. It was spoiled. Therefore you wanted sva-rajya… And after his death, it is also spoiled. So India’s karma will have to suffer, either Gandhi’s there or not there. Prakrteh kriya… Prakrteh: Everything is being done by the material nature. Prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih, by, dictated by different modes of nature. Ahankara-vimudhatma kartaham iti manyate: [Bg. 3.27] The rascal, being bewildered by, he’s thinking, ‘Without me, everything will be spoiled. I am the director. I am the director!” So I requested Gandhi, ‘Now you come out of this turmoil, politics. Just preach Bhagavad-gita.” No. He’ll be killed. That’s all. This is the way. Going on. Even a Gandhi commits mistake, what to speak of others. What is the effect of this sva-rajya. The effect of sva-rajya is that people are starving. That’s all. At least, British government would not allow like this. That’s a fact.

The Unlimited Glories of Srila Prabhupada

Glories of Srila Prabhupada

Srila Prabhupada is the Founder Acharya for Hare Krishna Movement. He is the ONLY reason anyone knows the words “Hare Krishna” in main stream culture. He produced more literature (books, conversations, letters, records, and lectures) than any other Vaisnava that lived during his time or lived after His Vapu association.

He opened more then one hundred temples all over the world. He wrote over 7,000 personal letters to his disciples, published in five volumes of books. He went around the world 12 times. Gajendra’s Prayers of Surrender

Gajendra’s Prayers of Surrender

My dear devotee, unto those who rise from bed at the end of night and offer Me the prayers offered by you, I give an eternal residence in the spiritual world at the end of their lives.

Srila Prabhupada writes (partial purport) : “… we should not forget the chanting of the Hare Krsna mantra under any circumstances. It will help us in the greatest danger, as we find in the life of Gajendra.” S.B. 8.4.26

om namo bhagavate vasudevaya om namo bhagavate vasudevaya om namo bhagavate vasudevaya

Srimad-Bhagavatam 8.3.1-29

1)Sri Shukadeva Gosvami continued : Thereafter, the King of elephants, Gajendra, fixed his mind in his heart with perfect intelligence and chanted a mantra which he had learned in his previous birth as Indradyumna and which he remembered by the grace of Krsna.

2)The King of the elephants, Gajendra, said : I offer my respectful obeisances unto the Supreme Person, Vasudeva [om namo bhagavate vasudevaya]. Because of Him this material body acts due to the presence of spirit, and He is therefore the root cause of everyone. He is worshipable for such exalted persons as Brahma and Shiva, and He has entered the heart of every living being. Let me meditate upon Him.

3)The Supreme Godhead is the supreme platform on which everything rests, the ingredient by which everything has been produced, and the person who has created and is the only cause of this cosmic manifestation. Nonetheless, He is different from the cause and the result. I surrender unto Him, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is self-sufficient in everything.

4)The Supreme Personality of Godhead, by expending His own energy, keeps this cosmic manifestation visible and again sometimes renders it invisible. He is both the supreme cause and the supreme result, the observer and the witness, in all circumstances. Thus He is transcendental to everything. May that Supreme Personality of Godhead give me protection.

5)In due course of time, when all the causative and effective manifestations of the universe, including the planets and their directors and maintainers, are annihilated, there is a situation of dense darkness. Above this darkness, however, is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. I take shelter of His lotus feet.

6)An artist on-stage, being covered by attractive dresses and dancing with different movements, is not understood by his audience ; similarly, the activities and features of the supreme artist cannot be understood even by the demigods or great sages, and certainly not by those who are unintelligent like animals. Neither the demigods and sages nor the unintelligent can understand the features of the Lord, nor can they express in words His actual position. May that Supreme Personality of Godhead give me protection.”

7) Renunciates and great sages who see all living beings equally, who are friendly to everyone and who flawlessly practice in the forest the vows of brahmacarya, nanaprastha and sannyasa desire to see the all-auspicious lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. May that Supreme Personality of Godhead be my destination.

8&9) The Supreme Personality fo Godhead has no material birth, activities, name, form, qualities or faults. To fulfill the purpose for which this material world is created and destroyed, He comes in the form of a human being like Lord Rama or Lord Krsna by His original internal potency. He has immense potency, and in various forms, all free from material contamination, He acts wonderfully. He is therefore the Supreme Brahman. I offer my respects to Him.

10) I offer my respectful obeisances unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the self-effulgent Supersoul, who is the witness in everyone’s heart, who enlightens the individual soul and who cannot be reached by exercises of the mind, words or consciousness.

11) The Supreme Personality of Godhead is realized by pure devotees who act in the transcendental existence of bhakti-yoga. He is the bestower of uncontaminated happiness and is the master of the transcendental world. Therefore I offer my respect unto Him.

12) I offer my respectful obeisances to Lord Vasudeva, who is all pervading, to the Lord’s fierce form as Lord Nrsimhadeva, to the Lord’s form as an animal [Lord Varahadeva], to Lord Dattatreya, who preached impersonalism, to Lord Buddha, and to all the other incarnations. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the Lord, who has no material qualities but who accepts the three qualities goodness, passion and ignorance within this material world. I also offer my respectful obeisances unto the impersonal Brahman effulgence.

13) I beg to offer my respectful obeisances unto You, who are the Supersoul, the superintendent of everything, and the witness of all that occurs. You are the Supreme Person, the origin of material nature and the total material energy. You are also the owner of the material body. Therefore, You are the supreme complete. I offer my respectful obeisances unto You.

14) My Lord, You are the observer of all the objectives of the senses. Without Your mercy, there is no possibility of solving the problem of doubts. The material world is just like a shadow resembling You. Indeed, one accepts this material world as real because it gives a glimpse of Your existence.

15) My Lord, You are the cause of all causes, but You Yourself have no cause. Therefore You are the wonderful cause of everything. I offer my respectful obeisances unto You, who are the shelter of the Vedic knowledge contained in the shastras like the Pancharatras and Vedanta-sutra, which are Your representations, and who are the source of the parampara system. Because it is You who can give lliberation, You are the only shelter for all transcendentalists. Let me offer my respectful obeisances unto You.

16) My Lord, as the fire in arani wood is covered, You and Your unlimited knowledge are covered by the material modes of nature. Your mind, however, is not attentive to the activities of the modes of nature. Those who are advanced in spiritual knowledge are not subject to the regulative principles directed in the Vedic literatures. Because such advanced souls are transcendental, You personally appear in their pure minds. Therefore I offer my respectful obeisances unto You.

17) Since an animal such as I has surrendered unto You, who are supremely liberated, certainly You will release me from this dangerous position. Indeed, being extremely merciful, You incessantly try to deliver me. By Your partial feature as Paramatma, You are situated in the hearts of all embodies beings. You are celebrated as direct transcendental knowledge, and You are unlimited. I offer my respectful obeisances unto You, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

18) My Lord, those who are completely freed from material contamination always meditate upon You within the cores of their hearts. You are extremely difficult to attain for those like me who are too attached to mental concoction, home, relatives, friends, money, servants and assistants. You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead, uncontaminated by the modes of nature. You are the reservoir of all enlightenment, the supreme controller. I therefore offer my respectful obeisances unto You.

19) After worshiping the Supreme Personality of Godhead, those who are interested in the four principles of religion, economic development, sense gratification and liberation obtain from Him what they desire. What then is to be said of other benedictions? Indeed, sometimes the Lord gives a spiritual body to such ambitious worshipers. May that Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is unlimitedly merciful, bestow upon me the benediction of liberation from this present danger and from the materialistic way of life.

20-21) Unalloyed devotees, who have no desire other than to serve the Lord, worship Him in full surrender and always hear and chant about His activities, which are most wonderful and auspicious. Thus they always merge in an ocean of transcendental bliss. Such devotees never ask the Lord for any benediction. I, however, am in danger. Thus I pray to that Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is eternally existing, who is invisible, who is the Lord of all great personalities, such as Brahma, and who is available only by transcendental bhakti-yoga. Being extremely subtle, He is beyond the reach of my senses and transcendental to all external realization. He is unlimited, He is the original cause, and He is completely full in everything. I offer my obeisances unto Him.

22-24) The Supreme Personality of Godhead creates His minor parts and parcels, the jiva-tattva, beginning with Lord Brahma, the demigods and the expansions of Vedic knowledge [Sama, Rig, Yajur and Atharva] and including all other living entities, moving and nonmoving, with their different names and characteristics. As the sparks of a fire or the shining rays of the sun emanate from their source and merge into it again and again, the mind, the intelligence, the senses, the gross and subtle material bodies, and the continuous transformations of the different modes of nature all emanate from the Lord and again merge into Him. He is neither demigod nor demon, neither human nor bird or beast. He is not woman, man or neuter, nor is He an animal. He is not a material quality, a fruitive activity, a manifestation or nonmanifestation. He is the last word in the discrimination of “not this, not this,” and He is unlimited. All glories to the Supreme Personality of Godhead!

25) I do not wish to live anymore after I am released from the attack of the crocodile. What is the use of an elephant’s body covered externally and internally by ignorance? I simply desire eternal liberation from the covering of ignorance. That covering is not destroyed by the influence of time.

26) Now, fully desiring release from material life, I offer my respectful obeisances unto that Supreme Person who is the creator of the universe, who is Himself the form of the universe and who is nonetheless transcendental to this cosmic manifestation. He is the supreme knower of everything in this world, the Supersoul of the universe. He is the unborn, supremely situated Lord. I offer my respectful obeisances unto Him.

27) I offer my respectful obeisances unto the Supreme, the Supersoul, the master of all mystic yoga, who is seen in the core of the heart by perfect mystics when they are completely purified and freed from the reactions of fruitive activity by practicing bhakti-yoga.

28) My Lord, You are the controller of formidable strength in three kinds of energy. You appear as the reservoir of all sense pleasure and the protector of the surrendered souls. You possess unlimited energy, but You are unapproachable by those who are unable to control their senses. I offer my respectful obeisances unto You again and again.

29) I offer my respectful obeisances unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead, by whose illusory energy the jiva, who is part and parcel of God, forgets his real identity because of the bodily concept of life. I take shelter of the Supreme Personality, whose glories are difficult to understand.

32)…O my Lord… master of the universe, O Supreme Personality of Godhead, I offer my respectful obeisances unto You.

Peace on Earth or the Earth in Pieces?

BHAGAVAD-GITA AS IT IS

“This book will tell you about real peace on earth,” I promised. “All right, sir, I’ll give it a look.” The young airman smiled as he tucked the volume under his arm. “Have a nice Christmas,” I added. “Hare Krsna.”

I’d been distributing my spiritual master’s books to San Antonio servicemen since nine o’clock that morning. Now I had to catch the bus from the base back into the city to join the other members of my group. It was late afternoon, and the mid-December air was cold and still. With numbed fingers I fumbled for the exact fare (thirty-five cents) and shuffled up the narrow metal steps onto the bus, along with half a dozen young airmen. I tried to seem casual about slipping into the only available seat. Whew! It had been a busy day. I glanced at the airman beside me. He squinted back from beneath a blue service cap pulled low over his brow.

“Hi,” I said. “How’s everything going for you?”

“Fine, sir.” Then relaxing his newly acquired military formality, he pushed his cap up. We recognized each
other and smiled. On his lap he held the book I had handed him back at the bus stop: BHAGAVAD-GITA AS IT IS, by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

“You’re a Hare Krsna, aren’t you?”

“That’s right. My name’s Mandaleswara dasa.”

We shook hands. “Mine’s Steve,” he said. “Where are you headed?”

“I’m going downtown to meet some friends at the Alamo. I’m not quite sure which stop….”

“Easy. I’ll let you know when we get there.” He paused. “You religious groups talk a lot about peace this time of the year, huh?”

“Excuse me?”

“You know. Back at the bus stop.”

We both leaned back as the bus pulled away from the curb.

“The book I gave you — the Bhagavad-gita — contains the scientific formula for peace on earth. That’s why I asked you to read it.”

“I know, but this is an old scripture from India. I’m the type that likes to be involved with what’s happening in the world today. You know what I mean? Practical things, like SALT talks, disarmament, the UN. Do Hare Krsnas believe in that?”

“Believe in what — peace through disarmament? But that’s not really practical.” Steve turned in his seat to face me. “Even if we got rid of every nuclear bomb and warhead in the world,” I said, “that wouldn’t solve the real problem. If we leave God out of our thinking, we’ll just become more and more greedy and envious, and finally we’ll start a third world war. America and Russia might sign an arms limitation treaty, but everyone knows that’s a joke. The way it is now, both sides just try to get the advantage by finding loopholes in the treaty, right? And then one side comes up with a neutron bomb or something and swears that they haven’t exactly broken the treaty. So even if, by some miracle, they did ban the bomb, what good would that do?”

“So you’re a pessimist,” he concluded. “You don’t believe in disarmament or peace.”

“A pessimist?” I thought about it. “No, I’m not a pessimist. I believe in peace, all right, but I know we’ll never have peace as long as we hold on to our greed and envy. It’s an impure mentality. That’s what these books I distribute say.”

“You said ‘impure mentality’?” “Yes. The mentality of exploiting God’s world as if it were ours and God didn’t even exist — that’s impure, don’t you think?”

“Sure, but don’t you think it’s possible to negotiate peace? After all, most of our men in Washington do have the people’s interest at heart.”

“America’s leaders? That reminds me of a story I once heard. There were these two brothers who were always getting into trouble. One day they started a fire in their basement, but they were able to put it out — after it had done a lot of damage to the house. Right after that they said, ‘Maybe Mom and Dad will be pleased with us for putting out the fire.’ “

With his thumb and index finger Steve was tracing the crease in his woolen military trousers. “So, what are you trying to say?”

“That our national leaders are just like those two brothers. But instead of one little fire, it’s a worldwide nuclear threat. Now they’re boasting about their ‘non-proliferation treaty’ and promising disarmament — and we’re supposed to be pleased and keep them in office. But they’re the ones who led us into this mess in the first place. They lit the fire. So whether they blow up the world or sign a new peace treaty, these guys are real rascals.”

He looked down, and in the shifting light he began leafing through the gita in his lap. We sat thoughtfully, sharing the silence for a few moments. He turned to the portrait of Srila Prabhupada. “I never have talked with you people before. I guess I’m just curious.” He frowned. “This is like your Bible, isn’t it? All your beliefs are in this book?”

“You have the key to world peace right there in your hands.” I suddenly realized that my words must have sounded crazy to him. Sure they were true, but why should this airman think that some book that had just dropped out of the blue at a bus stop could do more for world peace than SALT talks or the UN? As I searched for a way to explain, Steve gave me a clue.

“Hmmm, I see. You’re saying you believe in world peace, but not the way they’re trying for it.”

“Yes. And that’s exactly where this book comes in. The Bhagavad-gita says you can’t have peace on earth until you understand that everything belongs to God. You’ll just fight over who gets which part of God’s earth.”

“You mean like the conflicts in the Middle East?”

“Yes, the Middle East. Or even the middle of San Antonio. The whole world belongs to God. You’ll understand this when you read the Bhagavad-gita. Krsna, the Supreme Lord, is the real proprietor of everything in the creation. But when you forget Krsna, you have chaos and war.”

“Well, I’d say that’s a pretty safe generalization.”

“Sure it is, but it’s true. Look at Russia and America — they’re always competing for land, oil, money, influence. But neither side sees that the real owner is God. So you have dissension and the nuclear arms race.”

He looked down at the Bhagavad-gita on his lap. The bus stopped rather roughly — bad driver — and the book slid forward, closing shut as he caught it between his knees. “I don’t know,” he said, “it seems impractical to me. If everything is God’s … if we’re all stealing … how could you tolerate living in a world where you can’t own anything? If everything is God’s … then what about us? What do we get? See what I’m talking about?”

“Yes, I see your point.” I watched him lean back and open the Gita again on his lap. “Everyone gets his quota,” I said. “How many children were there in your family?”

“Seven. I have three brothers and three sisters.”

“And every child was provided for, wasn’t he? Your father earned all the money, paid all the bills, and owned all the property in the family. But you all got your necessities. Sometimes if the kids would get into little fights over whose toy or whose piece of candy was whose, your father would step in and settle things: ‘This is yours, this is his, this is hers — now don’t fight anymore.’ So it’s like that on a larger scale as well. Krsna is everyone’s father, and everything in the universe is His. But since we’re all Krsna’s children. He gives each of us the right to enjoy our own little portion of His property.”

“Yeah, I follow what you’re saying.”

“That’s the way my spiritual master explained it to me. If the leaders of the world’s nations would just admit that Lord Krsna is the rightful owner of everything, and if they would just see themselves as His children and try to follow His instructions in the Bhagavad-gita, then we’d have peace all over the world.”

“Just one big happy family, I suppose.”

“Yes, exactly. Everyone’s got his quota: ‘This is your America, this is your Russia — now don’t fight anymore.’ “

“But the Russians don’t even believe in God — not officially, anyway. But a lot of Americans read the Bible and pray. You know, America — ‘In God We Trust.’ “

“Sure, we stamp ‘In God We Trust’ on the currency and put the Bible on display in the White House.”

He grinned.

“But when you get right down to it, most Americans really put their trust in exploiting the property of God. They just want to improve the economy — with or without God. Isn’t it a fact? It’s the American way of life: raise our standard of living, increase our gross national product, raise our average yearly income — and then build bigger and better bombs to protect all the loot. So now Americans are worried about crime, energy, morals, drought, nuclear weapons. But if we actually trusted in God, then we’d be at peace.”

“So how can you Hare Krsnas really bring peace to the world?”

“Like I was saying, the key to world peace is in these books, and Srila Prabhupada’s disciples are distributing them all over the world. The real enemy of peace is ignorance of Krsna. By distributing these books we’re spreading Krsna consciousness, the scientific formula for peace. And as soon as the world’s leaders start reading Srila Prabhupada’s Bhagavad-gita and taking it to heart, then you’ll know that the enemy of peace has been defeated — then we can have peace on earth.”

“But you’ve got to admit the odds are really against you.” “I’m not saying I have any special power to bring world peace, Steve. But these books are powerful transcendental sound. My spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, says they’re like a moon of transcendental knowledge. You know how the moon appears small at first — just a sliver in the sky — but it grows bigger every night until you see a beautiful full moon. So Srila Prabhupada says the light of transcendental knowledge will spread more and more as we distribute these spiritual books. Gradually the darkness of ignorance — and that’s the real enemy of peace — will be destroyed, and then we can really have peace on earth.”

“Sounds mystical,” he mused. He had been leaning back, but suddenly he sat up and looked out the window. “The Alamo. I completely forgot.” He reached up and pulled the cord to buzz the driver. An abrupt end to our talk, I thought.

“Okay, here’s where I get off,” I said. “I really enjoyed talking with you. Hare Krsna.”

I stood up to leave and Steve smiled. “Hare Krsna.” I walked up the aisle to the metal railing at the front of the bus. Then I remembered.

“Oh, Steve, here’s our card. Why don’t you keep in touch.” I reached across two empty seats with the card in my outstretched hand, and he stood and leaned forward, holding the open Gita flat against his chest.

“Thanks, I think I’ll do that.” He took the card from my hand. I looked out from the open bus doorway and saw my friends in front of the Alamo, still distributing Srila Prabhupada’s books. And as I stepped out I saw that night was coming but so was the moon.

Raising Krishna Conscious Kids

Raising Krishna Conscious Kids

What a challenge, huh? Raising Krishna Conscious children has tested many. From observation of many devotee parents raising kids, I have come to see that being too extreme does not work if you want to raise balanced, Krishna Conscious children.

There is a famous saying, about tuning a musical instrument. It goes something like this: “If the string is not tight enough, it will not play. If you tighten it too much, it will snap.”

This can be analogous to many things in life, including raising children.

One nice way to raise children with Krishna, in a way they will appreciate, is to read Krishna Conscious story books with them, or even watch Krishna Conscious movies with them.

Krishna Conscious Videos

There are many Krishna Conscious videos suitable for kids. Some of these movies are actually really nice to watch, even for adults.

Little Krishna

One nice set of DVDs is the Little Krishna DVDs. It is a high-budget production made by Big Animation / Reliance, in connection with devotees at ISKCON Bangalore. It is a very well-done animation, with loveable characters (of course!). From the mischievous Krishna stealing butter with  his friends and the monkeys, to epic battle scenes with Krishna delivering justice to demons in self-defense, there are many cool scenes from the sweet to the awesome, from the fun to the funny, from the tear-jerking to the breathtaking.

Animated Ramayana – Warrior Prince

The Animated Ramayana is a classic. Many second generation devotees recall watching this movie many times, over and over again, as they grew up.

It is a $12 million dollar project. The animation style is a fusion style, consisting of 3 different schools of animation: Manga from Japan, Disney from the USA and Ravi Varma from India. The Warrior Prince is directed and conceived by Japanese master filmmaker Yugo Sako.

It is a pretty action packed movie, with many battle scenes.

Krishna Conscious Books for Children

There are many Krishna Conscious Story Books for children available. Here’s a couple for example:

Damodara – Glorified for Stealing Butter

This 31-page story book for children has lots of pictures and big text. It is the story of Damodara. Krishna’s is named Damodara for his pastimes of stealing butter and being caught by Mother Yasoda, who tied Krishna up with a rope around his belly. This is a beautiful story that shows the love between mother and son, and Krishna and his devotees.

Dhruva – the Star Devotee

This is the story of Dhruva. Dhruva is a prime example of a Vaishnava. From hearing about him, one can learn much about what it means to be a devotee of Krishna or Vishnu.

These are just some examples of fun ways to introduce your child to Krishna. Reading these stories and watching the videos can be an endearing experience.

Download Prabhupada’s 1977 Conversations

Prabhupada
Bhaktivedanta Archives have announced they will now release all of the original, unedited recordings of Srila Prabhupada which is very good news for everyone. They plan to release one year of recordings at a time and they have just released Srila Prabhupada’s previously unreleased 1977 conversations. These are very interesting recordings and document the last year of Srila Prabhupada’s physical presence on this planet.

You can download all of the files from the table below. For each conversation there are two files. Generally you will only want to download one or the other. One file is a standard MP3 file that you can play on any device that can play MP3′s and the other file is a PDF which contains the text transcription of the conversation along with the MP3 file attached to the PDF file. The PDF file is only for reading and listening from computers. On Mac computers the default program that opens PDF files (Preview) can not access the attached MP3 file so if you have a Mac computer you will need to download the free PDF viewer program from adobe.com and then you will be able to play the audio file which is attached to the PDF file on a Mac.

You can also listen to and download all the recordings of Srila Prabhupada including these new 1977 conversations at www.Krishna.tv
